I’m Vernon Trent. I make pictures, and some of them end up here.
Around April 2006, when photoblogging was chic, XoverIP grew out of the habit of carrying a camera and noticing things. Something on the street, someone I met, a landscape, an ordinary object that caught the light. Sometimes I went looking for a photograph. Sometimes one interrupted whatever else I was doing.
Posting became part of that habit. Choose a picture, put it up, see what followed. Over time, the frames began to collect their own history, along with the comments people left beneath them. In 2009, XoverIP was included in Smashing Magazine’s selection of inspiring photoblogs. A nice moment for something that had grown one photograph at a time.
Photography has been with me since childhood in Romania, when my grandfather encouraged me to explore it. It followed me to Germany in 1983 and eventually became my professional life. I worked with film, pinhole cameras and a range of printing processes, spending plenty of years in the darkroom. Some of that work lives here alongside pictures made with whatever camera happened to be within reach.
Then came a long pause. Other things needed my attention, and the blog went quiet.
Coming back has meant opening old folders, recovering photographs and finding things I’d almost forgotten making. The gaps are still there. So are the occasional surprises: a frame I once passed over, a familiar face, a comment that brings a whole afternoon back.
Today, XO is an archive with room to keep growing. Older photographs sit beside more recent observations. A carefully considered image might be followed by something spotted in passing. What belongs here is usually decided by a simple feeling: I’d like to put this one up.
You can follow the dates, browse the archive or move from one picture to the next. The captions sometimes tell you where or when. Occasionally there’s a little more to say.
